"Elvis: Changing the World With a Song"

Harsh beginnings came to you, and you knew real labor,
You lived in a world of hardship, no treats, and no favors.
But you carried your mother's love and a handy guitar,
And soon you would be famous as a rock-n-roll star.

There you were, a shy boy who followed his dream,
A Mississippi kid who somehow became the King.
You took that God-given talent and held us in your hands,
You took simple country girls, and made us your fans.

With a glance, with a smile, and with the sneer in your lips,
You set the world on fire with the swivel of your hips.
You were censored and you were blocked, but it would be all right,
For even the candle must first handle fire to then share its light.

You were a boy who loved God, and who loved his mother,
You were a man who loved many, who touched us like no other.
You gave of yourself, and you gave money to more than a few,
Because you knew what it meant to be a poor boy too.

We remember you in '56, and of course, '72,
And in our hearts, we'll always scream over you.
You truly were a life changer, one who only comes along,
When God sees it fit to change the whole world with a song.

Author's Note:

I'm a 20-year old college junior from Arkansas, and I just recently became an Elvis fan.
I got the inspiration for this poem after watching Aloha From Hawaii for the first time.
I could see so many things in Elvis - realness that transcended the television set.
All at once, I could see all the things that Elvis was to so many people,
and this poem is a humble tribute to an amazing man.
