Heartbreak Hotel

On January eighth nineteen thirty five,
In a small Mississippi town,
Vernon and Gladys Presley gave birth,
To a son who would become world renowned.

He was born Elvis Aaron Presley,
Who would later make his rise to fame,
And before his life sadly ended,
The name King would be a household name.

Elvis then moved on to Memphis,
When he was only thirteen years old,
And that's where he begin his stream of hits,
That would ultimately soon turn to gold.

Introducing rock and roll into many young lives,
He had a voice, and moves all his own,
Wiggling his hips and curling his lip,
Made his way into millions of homes.

He would take a song like no other could,
Transforming it into a magic delight,
His voice was soft yet powerful,
But his vibrating brought older folks fright.

From disc jockeys to our own politicians,
All cried out as though the devil were here,
Pastors of churches would condemn the young man,
Claiming our youth would be poisoned, they feared.

Even Ed Sullivan himself once claimed,
There'd be no Elvis Presley on his show,
But quickly he learned how he'd profit,
And brought him on so his audience would grow.

Hit after hit this young man put out,
Heartbreak Hotel, his first number one hit,
But so many more gold were to follow,
And the world didn't mind that one bit.

He gave concerts and played before thousands,
Signed autographs and gave money too,
So much in demand was this rock and roll star,
Selling over a billion before he was through.

He loved to sing them old gospel songs,
And to listen could bring tears to your eyes,
Feelings and expressions that came from his voice,
Brought emotions that could not be denied.

I am sure these songs will bring memories,
And take you back on a journey through time,
Blue Suede Shoes and Don't Be Cruel,
Were always two favorites of mine.

There was Jailhouse Rock and All Shook Up,
Hound Dog, and are You Lonesome Tonight,
Loving You and It's Now Or Never,
Made our high school dances just right.

He took time at the very height of his fame,
To serve country and ole Uncle Sam,
By proving to doubters he was great for us kids,
And will always be one helluva' man.

The King of rock and roll was taken from us,
August sixteenth, nineteen seventy seven,
When the Lord said to Elvis you've given enough,
Now come sing for my Angels in Heaven.
